About Us

Our Founder's Story:

My name is Cody Hultgren. I started out like anyone else. I was told to go to college and get a good job. What is a good job? Hell if I knew." I followed the conventional wisdom of attending college, but found myself taking aimless courses at a community college, unsure of my future path. It was during this period that I crossed paths with a handyman who offered me a job as his helper. I embraced the opportunity, working alongside him doing electrical, chimney sweeps, and whatever other tasks came our way during the day, while also serving at a restaurant in the evenings.

Strangely enough, I discovered a crazy satisfaction in getting dirty at work and walking around in work boots. It instilled in me a newfound self-respect. After about six months, I got a job offer in San Diego to work as an electrical apprentice and attend a real trade school. Within a week I had my bags packed, told my roommates goodbye and relocated to the beach and secured a position at ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors) trade school in Poway, California. Over the course of four years, I completed the program and obtained my journeyman license. Getting the chance to work on everything from custom homes, bar renovations to working on jet fueling stations on camp Pendleton. I finally found something I loved and the pay was a nice perk.

Many of my peers chose the college path, investing four to five years of their lives in institutions that supposedly guaranteed a prosperous career. Meanwhile, I attended a four-year trade school that my boss paid for. Today, I am a homeowner with a nice truck and a comfortable income, while some of my friends are only now considering entering the trades. Reflecting on my own experience, I realized that if I could help guide a few individuals toward embarking on a trade career and skipping the "college experience," it would spare them a great deal of hardship.

Skip College, Pick a Trade:

The phrase "Skip College, Pick a Trade" isn't just a catchy slogan; it's a philosophy I stand by. I believe in the value of trade schools and the rewarding careers they offer. Why spend four to five years and a fortune on a college education with no plan? You can embark on a fulfilling trade career in a fraction of the time? I went to ABC, a four-year trade school, and now I have a journeyman license. I can go anywhere in the country and work as an electrician, having this card changed my life and set me on a great career path that I didn’t even know was possible. So I want to share this story for those of you that have gone down the same path as me and are living the dream and also with those who were like me and didn’t know what the options were. There is a great rewarding future in the trades, you just have to pick one and stick with it.
